RIFQI AMIRUL ROSLI
A Sheathed Stinger (2020)

Rifqi is drawn to the decorative forms of religious art across various cultures—from Buddhist to Islamic designs. He also observes tattoos by Sak Yant monks (Thailand), and magical talismans from Sufism (Mystical Islamism) based on principles of complex sacred geometry. Forms in nature inspired many of these traditional arts, often deriving from Animistic beliefs, with designs with flourishes and sharp, tapered ends. His reinterpreted pieces here explore perceived symbols of protection but also posit elements of the dark and lethal — a venomous sting.

A Sheathed Stinger was exhibited in PrayPal at I_S_L_A_N_D_S as part of a collective work by Pure Ever.

Rifqi Amirul Rosli is an artist in Singapore whose works often deals with the in-between of things: states of suspension, transition, liminality. He probes into the construction of personal boundaries and speculative states that defines one’s purpose and sentimentality towards a place. He describes the personal connection one has to a physical, or an imagined place, which may not necessarily be a typical home, but could relate to a sense of familiarity, a tradition or a regular activity that becomes a part of one’s identity.
