First In, Last Out
2016
Digital Print

First In, Last Out is an account of the artist's experience in the army while serving his two years of compulsory National Service. Being positioned as the logistics support in the batallion, the work and responsibilities of a storeman are always 'behind-the-scene' in regards to supplying ration, accommodations, stores for training. Never at the front lines, the job as a storeman, would require support from before the start of a training and after the ending of the training. This series is an account of different scenes and dialogues that had been archived almost like a film still that depicts the everyday operations one has to go through to support.
Rifqi Amirul Rosli is an artist in Singapore whose works often deals with the in-between of things: states of suspension, transition, liminality. He probes into the construction of personal boundaries and speculative states that defines one’s purpose and sentimentality towards a place. He describes the personal connection one has to a physical, or an imagined place, which may not necessarily be a typical home, but could relate to a sense of familiarity, a tradition or a regular activity that becomes a part of one’s identity.
