LILIPUT (2018)

233 Joo Chiat Rd
07/09/18 - 08/09/18
a collaborative installation by Rifqi Amirul Rosli, Chong Ying Ying and Maria Clare Khoo

Drawing from its namesake, Lilliput was a mini golf course at big splash that was highly popular family recreational spot in the 2000s. Opened in 2003 at the turn of the new millennium, it was equipped with 18 holes spanning the area of five tennis courts, scattered with different miniature landmarks of Singapore. It’s format consisting of an amalgamation of various landscapes became a basis of reference for all three artists to begin from - a tiny theme park of bite sized measure - traversing a small space of multiplicity. A campy counterpart to what is considered a luxurious sport on a manicured green. Lilliput is a gist of its original form that is made entertaining and reduced for accessible enjoyment. The artists aim to transform the gallery into a space, twice removed from the relaxing resort form of golf. Working at different reflections of “other” spaces, with intersections that traverse architecture, place-making and memes.

Rifqi Amirul Rosli is an artist in Singapore whose works often deals with the in-between of things: states of suspension, transition, liminality. He probes into the construction of personal boundaries and speculative states that defines one’s purpose and sentimentality towards a place. He describes the personal connection one has to a physical, or an imagined place, which may not necessarily be a typical home, but could relate to a sense of familiarity, a tradition or a regular activity that becomes a part of one’s identity.
