RIFQI AMIRUL ROSLI
Travelogue: Indonesia
For The Winston Oh Travel Award Show (Practice Award) 2014

Rifqi adopts the use of symbolism in his body of work from idols and religious objects around various parts of Indonesia. He explores the duality of Displacement and familiarity in a foreign land touching on aspects of Javanese identity, cultural Diaspora and spirituality. Exploring on the idea of spirituality, Rifqi dives into the whole notion of sublimity and the perimeters of religion. As a developing country in social and political flux yet culturally rich in heritage, he utilizes this notion of "familiarity in unfamiliarity" from his travels, as he questions how we can relate to something so distant at the same time.

Rifqi Amirul Rosli is an artist in Singapore whose works often deals with the in-between of things: states of suspension, transition, liminality. He probes into the construction of personal boundaries and speculative states that defines one’s purpose and sentimentality towards a place. He describes the personal connection one has to a physical, or an imagined place, which may not necessarily be a typical home, but could relate to a sense of familiarity, a tradition or a regular activity that becomes a part of one’s identity.
